This is a voice note of the key words be spoken with their definitions. Listening to this a couple of times can be a very useful learning resource.
- Patrician - the rich and powerful ruling members of Roman society
- Domus - the name used for the houses of the Patricians
- Atrium - the central area of the house around which all the rooms were built, it was open to the sky
- Peristyle - small garden in the house
- Vomitorium - a room where the they had their throat tickled by a slave so they wold vomit, if they had eaten too much food
- Villa - different home, usually in the country side where Patricians went during the Summer
- Plebian- the poor and working class members of Roman Society
- Insulae - where the Plebeians in Ancient Rome lived, was like a block of flats, each family had one room
- Dole - free grain given to the Plebians, to make sure they were not hungry and wouldn't rebel
- Thermopolia - like a takeaway, Plebeians rarely cooked in their homes as it was dangerous to cook in the insulae, so they ate out in thermopolias.
- Aqueduct - very modern invention by the Romans , which were high stone arches containing cement-lined pipes, which carried water from the hills to the city. The water flowed into public fountains at the end of every street. The rich could even have water piped straight to their homes. Other pipes on the Aqueducts carried sewerage to the River Tiber.
- Tunic - knee length dress worn by men and women
- Toga - worn by men over their tunic
- Stola - worn by women over their tunic
- Colosseum - arena where gladiator fights took place
- Gladiators - owned by wealthy Romans, trained in a special school and provided entertainment through fighting wild animals and each other
- Circus maximus - arena where chariot racing took place
- Roman public baths - like public swimming pools nowadays, both rich and poor enjoyed them
- Changing room - to leave clothes and belongings
- Caladium - a very hot room containing a Sauna and a Turkish bath. Here the Romans covered their bodies with oil and perfume they then scraped the dirt off themselves with an instrument known as a Stirgil.
- Frigidarium - a cold room, with a swimming pool.
- Tepidarium - a warm room to help people sweat
- Roman Forum - a public space where people gathered to buy and sell goods, in the market, it was like a town square
- Ludus - primary school in Ancient Rome, children attended from 7-12
- Grammaticus - secondary school in Ancient Rome, only attended by Patricians boys
- Manumission - when a slave was freed by his owner
- Legionnaires - the name for soldiers in Ancient Rome
